We are continuing to work with TANAPA on the road maintenance in the park. The rains are now taking hold so the work that has been done on the main access roads by the Trust’s plant machinery has been timely. We are also working with TANAPA on a big project to develop another large water source in Mkomazi National Park for the elephant herds and other wildlife (oryx, buffalo, zebra, giraffe etc). Elephant numbers continue to be much lower than in previous years, which can only be due to the massive poaching on the Kenya side of the border.
The aircraft was able to undertake a fair number of patrols with the new engine fitted and has now had to go into the maintenance facility in Arusha to get the annual paperwork and permits all sorted. The new digital radio system in the Rhino Sanctuary is working very well and has been a massive boost to the personnel for both operations and security. All the new solar power systems have increased power to the fence and this, again, has been boosted the security systems. Another security outpost has been established and a further outpost is now being laid out, pending construction in a week.
