Rehabilitation and
Infrastructure

Rehabilitating any large piece of the natural environment requires an enormous amount of practical field work – the construction and clearing of roads and tracks, water sources, airstrips and firebreaks, aircraft patrols, deployment of plant machinery and vehicles, the creation and opening up of roads for access and detection of intrusion, the support of a fully-functioning workshop, long supply-runs, the installation of radio communications, solar power and water systems are to mention just a few.

The Trust’s recent work in Kora has included:

  • The rebuilding and ongoing maintenance of George Adamson’s camp
  • Establishment of a small workshop and stores
  • Installation of solar, electrical and water storage and supply systems
  • Installation of VHF radio communications
  • Deployment of the Trust’s heavy plant machinery (JCB, Massey Ferguson tractors, tension tipping trailer, water bowser) for infrastructure development and maintenance
  • Installation of an aircraft hangar and extension and heightening of existing aircraft hangar
  • Extension of the airstrip at the KWS Platoon Base
  • Support for the ongoing maintenance of roads and tracks

The Trust’s recent work in Kora continued . . .

  • Bush clearing for the opening-up of old roads constructed by Terence Adamson in the 1970’s and 1980’s
  • Maintenance of the water channel crossings
  • Scooping out of water pans and construction of new water pans
  • All roads and tracks in Kora GPS’d and a map produced by the Trust and handed to the KWS Planning Unit
  • EIA undertaken and NEMA approval given for fencing in Kora National Park
  • Working with QGIS and Ark-GIS contour mapping to site the strategically placed airstrips which will have to be constructed in this difficult terrain

Support for KWS has included:

  • Construction of KWS ranger housing at two platoon bases
  • Ongoing provision of fuel
  • Donations of vehicle tyres
  • Ongoing provision of water for KWS platoon bases
  • Donations of water storage tanks
  • Joint undertakings to maintain roads and tracks
  • Joint undertakings to bush-clear and open up old road network systems
  • Joint undertakings to construct, extend and maintain airstrips
  • Clearing site at Kora NP KWS HQ for a replica of George Adamson’s old camp, to be adjacent to a visitors camp site
  • Plans underway to construct an historical education centre at Kora NP KWS HQ for visitors and local school pupils
  • Support for World Ranger Day, World Wildlife Day, local sports teams’ activities, visits by government officials and tree planting
