Lee, one of our resident female rhinos that arrived in 2001, has had her first calf! A female. We are absolutely delighted. All our resident adult females have now bred (with the exception of the new female from the Czech Republic who is just four years old). The Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary now holds 13 rhino (8 female and 5 male).
The three rhino from the Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic (that arrived in May 2009) are in very good shape. We have separated the older pair (Deborah and Jamie) into their own large area. Jabu, the young two year old male, is on his own in a large paddock and we are looking for a female to keep him company. We are still supplementing their feed as Mkomazi is extremely dry and we just felt that we should keep adding some lucerne, horse nuts, bananas and carrots to their diets until the rains come.
The extension to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary continues and is a massive civil engineering project.
