We are working with TANAPA to build a new road from the Ngurunga Hills to Kavateta and then across to the Mbula water hole. This will help with increased ranger patrols and it will also give easier access to tourists or TANAPA staff who are going to Maore.
Flying patrols took place throughout the first few months of the year. The aircraft is now in Arusha undergoing it’s Certificate of Airworthiness. It is now due for an engine replacement.
We continue to have an excellent and close working partnership with TANAPA and meet weekly with the TANAPA Chief Park Warden or his staff. Great progress has been made on the planned vocational training college (VTC). We have held two meetings with the main partners in this enterprise. We are also pleased to be working closely with TANAPA on our environmental education programme ‘Rafiki wa Faru’ (Friends of the Rhino). Since the programmes inception in 2008, we have brought in close to 4,500 students, teachers and village leader groups to see the work that is going on here in Mkomazi. TANAPA are enthusiastic about this work. We have also welcomed two groups from MWEKA College for African Wildlife Management over the past month. These are the wardens and officers of the future so it is always good to show them the work going on here.
